Wiebke Möbius is a research scientist and head of the Electron Microscopy Core Unit of the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (MPI-NAT)-City Campus, Göttingen. She obtained her PhD at the University of Bonn studying intracellular glycosphingolipid transport. After a postdoc period in the lab of Hans Geuze in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and Gareth Griffith, EMBL, Heidelberg, she established the EM lab at the former MPI of Experimental Medicine. Her main research interests are the biology of the myelinating glia cells, myelin turnover and models of myelin disease with a focus on mitochondrial function in axons. In her group she applies methods using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for morphological studies as well as the subcellular localization of antigens. Scanning electron microscopy is used for imaging large tissue samples and volume imaging by focused ion beam scanning EM (FIB-SEM) for 3D reconstruction.
